Arizona State University School of Interdisciplinary Studies
Bachelor of Interdisciplinary
Studies
Brief overiew of the B.I.S. program.
What is BIS?
The Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies program is an unique opportunity for students to intergrate two
academic areas of interest that they will develop their ability to communicate across disciplines to solve problems.
Prospective students, Pre-BIS students, will select two concentration areas, take 56 hours, complete
a cyber-workshop, complete the necessary math class, and have a 2.0 GPA before even being admitted to the program
BIS Core Classes:
M BIS 301 Foundations of Interdisciplinary Studies. (3)fall and springIntroduces concepts
and methods of interdisciplinary study by critically examining anticipated 21st-century workplace and civic trends. Lecture,
seminar, discussion. Prerequisites: BIS major; 2.00 GPA. General Studies: L
Skills, Insights, Content Learned from BIS 301:
I learned what it meant to think interdisciplinary. My biggest insight was that in life you really need to know
a lot about a lot things instead of a lot about one thing or a little about a lot of things. The content of this class
was a lot of writing projects that were intended to make me think in different perspectives.
M BIS 302 Interdisciplinary Inquiry. (3)fall and springExplores interdisciplinarity and integration
as applied to various approaches of human inquiry. Lecture, seminar, discussion. Prerequisite: BIS 301.
Skills, Insights, Content Learned from BIS 302:
This classes made me think about how people use research in the market place. This class was mostly about
how to analize field research. The biggest insight that I learned was how to tell good research from badly done research.
M BIS 401 Applied Interdisciplinary Studies. (3)fall and springApplies interdisciplinary problem-solving
skills in internships, service-learning, or research; may involve individual or group projects combining both concentrations.
Prerequisites: BIS 301, 302; prior application.
Skills, Insights, Content Learned from BIS 401:
This is an applied internship that I learned what it really means to be part of a team. The class was mostly about
how communicate with others and be part of a team. The biggest insight that I got was that everyone needs to be part
of the team in order for any business to work. M BIS 402 Senior Seminar. (3)fall and springCapstone course helps integrate classroom and
experiential learning. Students choose among course topics that address their interests. Lecture, seminar, discussion. Prerequisites:
BIS 301, 302. Pre- or corequisite: BIS 401. General Studies: L
Skills, Insights, Content Learned from BIS 402:
This class happens to be my favorite of the four BIS core classes because it takes all the rest of the three classes
and makes you think about how it will affect your life. The biggest insight from this class is the fact that everyone
needs meaning in their life in order to be happy.
